Centennial
Pop. 50 Elev. 8,076

Named for the centennial of the Declaration of Independence, a gold mine was discovered here in 1876 by Col. Stephen W. Downey, pioneer and statesman. The gold ran out quickly, and only a few tough customers remained behind. Logging and ranching became the little town’s livelihood, and in time, Centennial became a stopover for travelers on their way to the Snowy Range. The village provides a stunning view down into the Centennial Valley, and up the slopes of the tree-covered mountains, an especially lovely sight in autumn when the aspens turn gold.
