Once a rendezvous site, Riverton was part of the Wind River Reservation when it was first established. Originally named Wadsworth for the Indian agent at Fort Washakie, Riverton was platted in 1906. A scuffle over homesteader claims resulted in federal intervention shortly thereafter. Over the first half of the twentieth century, extensive irrigation projects and well digging created a lush farmland. Dairy cattle were also brought here, and continue to be a mainstay of the economy. Wyoming’s biggest dairy farm is located here.

During the 1960s, huge deposits of uranium were discovered in the nearby Gas Hills. This boosted the economy, until nuclear power came under scrutiny in the 1970s. Central Wyoming Community College opened here in 1968.

Now Riverton has a diversified economic base, and its attractive location near the Wind River Mountains is inviting to tourists and new businesses alike.
