Prospector Harrison Church found a vein of coal just north of this town in 1868. It wasn’t until 1894 that Church found enough investors to start the Diamond Coal and Coke Company, named for the pristine coal, "black diamonds." Riches of another kind came with the advent of Prohibition, which brought prosperity to Diamondville when its bootlegging operation became popular product in Chicago. The original coal mine played out in the 1930s, but the area continues to be coal-rich.
