Kaycee has a wild history as home to infamous outlaws. Established as a cowman’s town in 1900 and named for the brand, KC, owned by Peters and Alston. Kaycee is probably the smallest town to told a Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association (PRCA) rodeo and the community pride shows. Kaycee was an important site of the Johnson County War, one of the most significant events in Old West history. The Bozeman Trail, which linked the Oregon Trail to the Montana gold mines, can still be viewed east of town. The infamous "Hole-in-the-Wall" country and outlaw cave where the legendary outlaws Butch cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the rest of the Hole-in-the-wall gang hid out is just west of town.
