First settled by Mormons in 1879, Auburn was abandoned for a time. When the growing Star Valley population revived it a few years later, one woman said the empty buildings reminded her of Goldsmith’s "Deserted Village," and the poetic name Auburn stuck. The old rock church, built in 1889, was the only stone building in the valley until 1900. Butch Cassidy and his friends would sometimes attend socials and dances here when they were hiding out at the nearby Davis Ranch.
